Mitch Mortwaite, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said the victim was in the sixth grade, about 11 or 12 years old. And was probably in high school for breakfast.
Mitch Mortwaite said four other students and a school administrator were among those injured by the 17-year-old attacker. The police team also found an explosive device in the school, which they defused. Mortwaite said the attacker had been killed, adding, “Officers immediately attempted to locate the source of the threat and located it immediately. Our team found the attacker dead there. He had shot himself.”
High school student Ava Augustus told a local TV station that she hid in her classroom during the shooting. When officials told her the danger had passed, she ran outside. Mortvet said that the five people who were injured in the firing are out of danger. The school announced that classes would be canceled Friday and counseling would be available to students. Perry is about 35 miles (55 kilometers) from the state capital, Des Moines.
