Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that he has spoken directly to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin  (Trump and Putin)  over the phone. Trump said that during the conversation, it was agreed to start talks to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump said in a social media post that he had a ‘long and very productive phone call’ with Putin and both decided that their teams would start talks immediately. It is believed that this conversation between the two leaders will prove to be important in pushing the 3-year-long war towards an end.

Putin will come to America, Trump will go to Russia

Trump also said that he and Putin have agreed to visit each other’s countries. Trump wrote on the social media platform TruthSocial, ‘As we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths in the Russia-Ukraine war. President Putin also used my strong election slogan ‘Common Sense’. We both believe in this and we have agreed to work very closely together, including by visiting each other’s countries.’

There was also a discussion on talking to Zelensky
The US negotiating team will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. It is being told that this is the first time in 3 years that Russia has been talked to about Ukraine and no representative of Ukraine was present during the talks. However, there has been a discussion between Trump and Putin about talking to Zelensky as well. At the same time, both the leaders also talked about the issue of the Middle East.

Russia’s statement came out on the talks
Russia’s statement has also come on the talks between the two leaders. The Kremlin, the office of the Russian President, has said that during the phone call between President Putin and Trump, the two leaders agreed that ‘the time has come for our countries to work together.’ Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow. Peskov said, ‘The solution to the Ukraine crisis was also discussed. President Trump advocated the urgent need for a ceasefire and a peaceful solution to the problems.’
