Tsunami waves rise in the Pacific Ocean
The earthquake that struck Russia’s Far East in the early hours of Wednesday triggered a tsunami in the North Pacific region and a warning was issued for Alaska and Hawaii in the US and south of New Zealand. Tsunami warning sirens started ringing in Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii in the US, on Tuesday and people were asked to move to higher places. The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the first wave of a tsunami about 30 cm high reached Nemuro on the east coast of Hokkaido.
There have been reports of damage and people being evacuated to safer places in the Russian region near the Kamchatka Peninsula, the epicentre of the earthquake. Local governor Valery Limarenko said that the first wave of the tsunami reached the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement of Russia’s Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
