Who was Purja? ( Nirmal Purja) 

Karakoram: The death of renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja   ( Nirmal Purja)   has been confirmed following a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in the Karakoram range, located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Two days after he went missing following the avalanche, ‘Elite Exped’—the expedition company he was associated with—issued a statement on Instagram confirming his death.

Purja was 43 years old. He was leading an expedition to climb Broad Peak. During the climb, an avalanche struck on Thursday afternoon, and contact was lost with all 10 members of the team. The expedition team included six mountaineers from Nepal and one each from Pakistan, Oman, the USA, and China. Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi was also part of the team.

‘Elite Exped,’ the company Purja was associated with, paid tribute to him, describing him as a leader who inspired the trust of millions through his courage and humility.

Nepal’s PM pays tribute
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah paid tribute to the mountaineering legend and the five other Nepali mountaineers. The PM stated that mountaineering is not merely about reaching the summit; it symbolizes courage, discipline, sacrifice, and the resolve to push the boundaries of human limits.

PM Shah added that while his physical journey has ended, his courage, dedication, and contributions will live on in history and continue to inspire generations.

Who was Purja?
Purja was counted among the world’s most renowned mountaineers. He gained prominence in 2019 when he completed the ascent of all 14 of the world’s peaks exceeding 8,000 meters in just over six months.

Purja broke the record previously held by South Korean mountaineer Kim Chang-ho, who had completed the same challenge in seven months.

A Netflix documentary titled *14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible* was later made about this record-breaking expedition of Purja’s.

Before becoming a professional mountaineer, Purja served in the British Army for 16 years. Through his passion, he earned immense love and respect within the mountaineering community—a legacy that will be remembered for a lifetime.

It is worth noting that a similar incident occurred when around 900 mountaineers were stranded on the Chinese side of Mount Everest due to a sudden blizzard; the lives of the hundreds of hikers trapped in the storm were saved only with great difficulty.
