What is the story behind the Boxing Day Test?  ( Boxing Day) 

Melbourne: In Australia, the Test match played every year on December 26th is known as the Boxing Day    ( Boxing Day)   Test. This Test match, which begins on December 26th, the day after Christmas, is an important part of Australian cricket tradition, and its history is quite unique. During Christmas, people in Australia are on a long holiday, and according to Christian traditions, everyone gives each other gifts, which are opened the next day, December 26th, hence it is also known as Boxing Day.

The term Boxing Day entered cricket in 1892.
In 1892, when the domestic cricket season was being played in Australia, matches were also played on the day after Christmas, and that’s when the term Boxing Day entered cricket. In international cricket, the first Boxing Day Test match was played in 1950 between Australia and England. In the 1974-75 Ashes series, Cricket Australia started the tradition of playing a Boxing Day Test match, with the first day’s play taking place on December 26th, and that match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Since then, the Boxing Day Test has always been played at this historic ground in Melbourne, a major reason being its large seating capacity, which allows nearly one lakh people to enjoy the match in the stadium.

Looking at the Australian team’s record in Boxing Day Tests, it is quite impressive. Looking at the Australian team’s record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, they have played 117 matches there so far, winning 68 and losing 32. Furthermore, since 2000, Australia’s record at the MCG shows they have won 19 out of 25 matches played, with only 4 losses. Two of those losses came against India.
