Washington: A major development has emerged amidst the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump ( Trump ) has claimed that Iran shot down a state-of-the-art US Army Apache helicopter that was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that the US must respond to this attack. This incident marks the first loss of a US Army Apache helicopter during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Trump shares information on social media
In a social media post, Donald Trump stated he was informed by the US military that Iran targeted a US Apache helicopter during a routine patrol over the Strait of Hormuz last night. Trump wrote, “The Iranians shot down one of our state-of-the-art Apache helicopters. Both pilots on board are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the US must respond to this attack.”
Drone boat saves both pilots
According to the US President, a drone boat arrived at the scene after the helicopter crashed and safely rescued both pilots. They were transported to a safe location without injury. Meanwhile, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed during a routine patrol in territorial waters off the coast of Oman. However, CENTCOM did not disclose the cause of the crash and stated that an investigation has been launched.
Soldiers rescued within two hours of the incident
CENTCOM stated that both soldiers were safely rescued within approximately two hours of the crash, and their condition is stable. CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Timothy Hawkins stated that a US Navy unmanned surface drone ship located the helicopter’s crew and safely retrieved them. They were subsequently transported to another location and evacuated via helicopter. This drone vessel was part of Task Force 59, established in 2021; comprising unmanned boats and drones, it is considered the US Navy’s first special task force of its kind.
What makes Apache helicopters so special?
The AH-64 Apache is counted among the US military’s most important attack helicopters. They are utilized for precision strikes, close air support, and surveillance missions. The US has also employed these helicopters to monitor Iranian oil supplies and tankers, as well as to enforce blockades. The United Arab Emirates has also used Apache helicopters to shoot down Iranian drones. According to US Central Command, these helicopters have previously been used in operations against small Iranian boats.
The US has suffered heavy losses in the conflict
According to a Congressional Research Service report released in May, the US military has lost various military assets since the conflict began in late February. The report indicates that the US has so far lost at least five fighter jets, seven Stratotanker refueling aircraft, one search-and-rescue helicopter, and more than two dozen drones. Tensions in the region could escalate further following the downing of the Apache helicopter. Following President Trump’s statement, the world is now watching to see what retaliatory measures the US takes in response to this incident.
