Tibet Earthquake: 4.1 Magnitude Quake Hits Tibet Early Morning, No Major Damage Reported

International: Tibet experienced an earthquake early Friday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake measured 4.1 on the Richter scale. Authorities have stated that no major loss of life or property has been reported so far due to the relatively low intensity of the quake.

As per NCS data, the earthquake occurred on May 8, 2026, at around 3:10 AM IST. The quake struck at a depth of 38 kilometers beneath the surface. The epicenter was located at latitude 35.385° North and longitude 85.112° East.

Experts explain that shallow earthquakes are generally considered more dangerous than deeper ones because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking and increasing the possibility of structural damage and casualties.

The Tibetan Plateau is known for frequent seismic activity caused by tectonic plate movements. The region lies near a major geological fault zone where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate. This constant collision is responsible for recurring earthquakes across Tibet and neighboring Himalayan regions.

Geologists also note that the tectonic uplift in this region is so powerful that it can gradually alter the height of Himalayan mountain peaks over time.
