Delhi: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has got its new chairman in the form of Preeti Sudan today. Preeti Sudan is a 1983 batch retired IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. Sudan has previously been a member of UPSC. She has previously held various positions including Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Preeti Sudan, a 1983 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the chairman of UPSC. Sudan, who retired  (retired) as Union Health Secretary in July 2020, has about 37 years of experience in various fields of government administration.

During her tenure as Union Health Secretary, Preeti Sudan played an important role in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Sudan has also previously served as Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution and has held important positions in the Ministries of Women and Child Development and Defence. Her state-level experience includes roles in finance and planning, disaster management, tourism and agriculture.

Who is Preeti Sudan?

Preeti Sudan is a retired IAS officer of the 1983 batch of Andhra Pradesh cadre. Sudan holds an M.Phil. in Economics and an M.Sc. in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics (LSE). She has contributed to many national programs, including launching major programs like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat. Her efforts led to the formation of the National Medical Commission and important laws like the ban on e-cigarettes.

She was also a consultant with the World Bank

Apart from this, Sudan has worked as a consultant with the World Bank and has held important positions such as President of COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and Vice President of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. She was also the Chairperson of the Global Digital Health Partnership and a member of the WHO’s Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response. Before being appointed Chairperson, Sudan was working as a Member in UPSC on November 29, 2022.
