According to a BBC report, 60 per cent of the population (1,500 people) of Coober Pedy lives in undergrad homes.

Due to being a rocky and sandy area, the temperature in Coober Pedi changes rapidly. It is very hot. In such a situation, people built their houses to get relief in the pits which were formed due to the mining of Opal Gemstone. All the facilities of amenities are available in these houses. Due to being underground, these houses remain cool and there is no need for a cooler.

There is also a museum in the city of Coober Pedy, a unique city located between Alice Springs and Adelaide. The unique lifestyle of the city attracts a lot of people. Many films have also been shot here including the Hollywood film ‘Pitch Black’ in the year 2000. In the Coober Pedi, sign boards placed at various places warn people. The Hybrid Energy Power Plant of Coober Pedi is now the new center of attraction. It meets 70% of the power requirement of the city.

Located 850 away from Adelaide, Coober Pedy is the second most valuable stone after the Opal Gemstone. There is very little rain here. In summer the temperature goes up to 53 degree Celsius. The favorite game of the people here is golf but they play it at night. Libraries, jewelry stores, hotel-pubs and super markets have all been built underground. Even the swimming pool is underground.
