Coimbatore: Days after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by her teacher in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, a 17-year-old girl committed suicide, prompting protests by classmates, women and political organizations on Friday. Police said that this incident of alleged sexual abuse dates back to April when the teacher had called the girl to the school in the name of special classes as classes were going online due to the Kovid-19 pandemic.
Police said the girl had complained to the school management but no action was taken. Later he dropped out of school and took admission in another nearby school. But she could not recover from the shock and committed suicide on Thursday when her parents were away.
He said that the suicide came to light when a friend of the girl tried to contact her but did not get any response. After this he informed the girl’s father. The door of the house was locked from inside after which her father broke the door and found the girl hanging from the noose. He took her to a hospital where doctors told that she had died before she could be brought to the hospital.
He said that on coming to know about the incident, AIDWA, SFI and Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and other organizations demonstrated in front of the collector’s office demanding immediate arrest of the accused teacher.
Police said that a case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Child Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act has been registered and investigation has been started. He told that the minor has left a suicide note but it is not yet known what is written in it.
