Suryakumar Yadav: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly decided to remove Suryakumar (Suryakumar ) Yadav from the T20 International captaincy, and an announcement regarding the new captain is expected very soon. Team India clinched the T20 World Cup title—played in February and March of this year—under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership; however, his performance with the bat during the tournament was far from impressive. According to a report by the news agency PTI, a BCCI source stated that, following consultations with the selection committee, the BCCI administration, and Team India’s Head Coach, a decision has been reached: Team India must now move forward in the T20 format under the leadership of a new captain. While Team India did indeed win the World Cup under Surya’s captaincy, considering his current form and long-term future, the time has come to chart a new path forward.
Tilak Varma Joins Shreyas Iyer in the Race for Captaincy
Among the contenders vying to replace Suryakumar Yadav as Team India’s new T20 captain, two names have emerged as the frontrunners: Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma. In their statement, the BCCI source identified both these players as the leading candidates in the race for the captaincy. Although Shreyas Iyer was unable to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup due to injury, he boasts an impressive record in this format. Meanwhile, over the past few years, Tilak Varma has also proven himself to be a match-winner; notably, he has been entrusted with the captaincy of the India ‘A’ squad touring Sri Lanka. However, neither player has yet assumed the responsibility of captaining Team India in a single international match.
