Washington: The US Supreme Court has overturned the heavy import duties, or tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump ( Trump’) on several countries. In the decision, delivered on Friday, the court, by a 6–3 majority, stated that the emergency powers used by Trump to impose these tariffs were unjustified. This decision is believed to have dealt a major blow to Trump’s economic plans. Following the court’s decision, Trump stated in a press conference that the Supreme Court did not listen to him. The US President called the court’s decision disappointing. He described the Supreme Court’s decision as disappointing and said the court had made a shameful decision.
Trump increases tariffs on all countries by 10%
Seemingly unhappy with the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump announced a 10% tariff increase on all countries. He said in the press conference, “I have other options on tariffs.” Now I can levy even higher tariffs. America’s economic security is essential. The Supreme Court caved in to pressure from the opposition. I’ve made better decisions than other presidents. I’ve benefited America by billions of dollars. I can impose even higher tariffs for America’s security.’ Trump said a 10% global tariff will be imposed.
What did the Supreme Court say about Trump’s tariffs?
The Supreme Court stated in its decision that the US Constitution clearly grants Congress the full power to impose taxes, including tariffs or duties. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision, “The framers of the Constitution did not grant the President or the Executive any power to impose taxes.” Three justices—Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Brett Kavanaugh—dissented from the decision. Justice Kavanaugh stated that these tariffs, whether good or bad from a policy perspective, are completely legitimate based on law, history, and prior decisions.
Will Trump administration officials find a solution?
Chief Justice Roberts further stated that no president has ever been empowered to impose such tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), and therefore, such power never existed. This ruling does not completely prevent Trump from imposing tariffs, as he can use other laws. However, it does significantly restrict some of his powers. Nevertheless, senior Trump administration officials say they will try to maintain the tariff regime through other means.
Trump Calls the Court’s Decision a Shame
When the case went to the Supreme Court, Trump stated that a decision against him would cause significant damage to the country’s economy. At the time of the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump was in private meetings with approximately 24 governors from both parties, Democratic and Republican. When informed of the unanimous decision, he called it “shameful.” Polls show that the tariffs imposed by Trump were not well-received by the public. In fact, common people believed that due to tariffs, inflation was increasing and it was becoming difficult to manage expenses.
