Kerala Shutdown Over Student Death Sparks Caste Discrimination Debate

National news:Kerala witnessed a statewide shutdown on Tuesday as several organizations called for protest over the death of a twenty two year old dental student, Nitin Raj. The shutdown, observed from morning to evening, was supported by more than fifty groups demanding a fair investigation and justice in the case.

The student, who was pursuing Bachelor of Dental Surgery at a private college in Kannur district, died after falling from a college building earlier this month. According to family members and friends, he had been facing continuous caste-based discrimination and harassment from certain faculty members.

The protest was led by various Dalit organizations along with the Justice for Nitin Raj Action Council. Organizers stated that essential services were kept operational and no force was used to stop vehicles during the shutdown.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred shortly after the student left the principal’s office. He was found critically injured and later died during treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident have intensified concerns about discrimination within educational institutions.

The case has triggered a wider debate across the country about equality, student safety, and the need for strict action against any form of discrimination in campuses. Protesters have urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure accountability of those responsible.

Authorities are currently examining the allegations, and further action is expected based on the findings of the investigation.
