Las Vegas: A massive winter storm and snowfall    ( Snowfall )    have wreaked havoc across the United States, plunging the country into a deep freeze. Sunday became an extremely difficult day for travel in the US. According to US officials, more than 13,500 flights have been canceled so far amid the severe cold and storm. This has caused panic among passengers. Airlines have warned of widespread flight cancellations and delays at the country’s busiest airports.

More than 180 Million People Could Be Affected
The National Weather Service said Saturday night that snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain could affect nearly 180 million people, or more than half of the US population. The storm stretches from the Southern Rocky Mountains to New England. After passing through the South, the storm is now moving northeast, where 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters) of snowfall is expected from Washington to New York and Boston.

Sunday Worse Than During the Pandemic

According to the flight tracking site FlightAware, more than 13,500 flights have been canceled across the US since Saturday, with approximately 9,600 of them on Sunday. ​​According to data from aviation analytics company Cirium, this Sunday became the day with the most flight cancellations since the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 29 percent of all US departing flights have been canceled. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport warned passengers on its website of widespread flight cancellations. Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines have canceled approximately 1,000 flights each, while United Airlines has canceled more than 800 flights and JetBlue has canceled more than 560 flights (approximately 70 percent of its schedule).
