News website The Daily Beast reported on November 21 that for the past three months, officials at Russia’s southern universities have tried to persuade students to accept offers from the Russian military to join their ranks.
Students at Russia’s South University in Rostov-on-Don have said that students from Africa studying in Russia are being pressured to join mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group fighting against Ukraine. Salaries ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 were promised to those willing to fight in Ukraine, while those who turned down the offers were threatened with cancellation of scholarships and increases in their tuition costs.
