Mumbai: Rains have disrupted the system in most parts of the country. Rains continue to wreak havoc from mountains to plains. Roads submerged in torrential rains in Mumbai, many flights had to be diverted. (flights diverted)  Reports of floods and landslides are continuously coming from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Rivers are in spate in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to the Meteorological Department, more rain may be recorded in the coming time.

Maharashtra: 50 flights cancelled

Flight services at Mumbai airport were badly affected on Monday due to poor visibility after heavy rains. Operations on the runway remained suspended for more than an hour due to poor visibility and about 50 flights were cancelled. Sources said that out of the 50 flights (both arrival and departure) cancelled till 11 am, 42 were of IndiGo and six of Air India. Continuous rain has made it difficult for people to come out on the roads. Many roads are submerged in water.

Five killed in two days in Goa

Goa received heavy rains for the third consecutive day on Monday. Due to which many low-lying areas were flooded and five people died in wall collapse incidents in two days. Goa has been receiving heavy rains since Saturday and the state education department has declared a holiday for all schools up to class 12 on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ and predicted moderate to heavy rains with strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph at many places in North and South Goa districts.

Uttarakhand rain affects life

Incessant rains continued in many parts of Uttarakhand on Monday, causing rivers in the Kumaon region to overflow, blocking hundreds of rural roads and heavy waterlogging in many villages in Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts. The Char Dham Yatra resumed on Monday after the weather improved in the Garhwal region. The yatra was suspended for a day in view of the forecast of heavy rains by the Meteorological Department. Pithoragarh has received 125.50 mm of rain, where the Kali, Gori and Saryu rivers are flowing close to the danger mark. More than 200 rural roads across the state have been blocked by landslide debris.

70 routes including highways closed in Himachal Pradesh

Due to several incidents of landslides due to rain in various parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday, the administration had to close more than 70 roads, including a highway. The Shimla-Kinnaur road (National Highway 5) has been blocked near Nathpa ‘sliding point’ in Kinnaur district. Apart from National Highway 5, traffic has been stopped on 70 roads. Of these, traffic is banned on 31 roads in Mandi, 26 in Shimla, four each in Sirmaur and Kinnaur, two each in Hamirpur and Kullu and one road in Kangra district. 84 transformers and 51 water schemes have also been affected. The Regional Meteorological Office in Shimla has issued a ‘yellow alert’, predicting heavy rains, storms and lightning at different places on July 11-12. Issuing a ‘yellow alert’, the Meteorological Department has warned that due to torrential rains, low-lying areas of the city may get flooded and traffic on important roads may be affected. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday conducted an aerial survey of East Champaran, Gopalganj and West Champaran districts as the water level of several rivers rose after heavy rains in the state. Accompanied by Bihar Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and senior officials of the concerned departments and district administration, the Chief Minister also inspected the Gandak Barrage in Valmiki Nagar and took stock of the preparations made by the officials. According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, Nitish Kumar today (Monday) took stock of the situation by conducting an aerial survey of the rising water level of rivers in West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj districts. Several rivers like Kamala, Kosi and Mahananda crossed the danger mark in the low-lying areas of Purnia, Madhubani, Khagaria Darbhanga, creating flood-like conditions. The water level of almost all the rivers is rising and engulfing the low-lying areas on the way.
