Bishkek: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin (Putin ) in Bishkek, the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan. The two leaders also held bilateral talks during the meeting. He clearly told Putin that there has been enough war and urged him to move towards peace. PM Modi was referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
It is worth noting that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been ongoing for four and a half years. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives, and dozens of cities have been devastated, yet neither Ukraine nor Russia is willing to back down. That is why Prime Minister Modi told President Putin today that war benefits no one; it would be better for Russia to consider peace and seek ways to end the conflict, as every single day of war weighs heavily on humanity.

PM Modi shared a photo of his meeting with Putin on his X handle. He stated, “Had a detailed conversation with President Putin. All aspects of the India-Russia ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ were discussed. It is heartening to see the remarkable progress made in various sectors in recent years. Key areas of India-Russia friendship include energy, innovation, space, fertilizers, and people-to-people ties.”
What did PM Modi say to Putin?
PM Modi held an extensive meeting with President Putin in Bishkek. He clearly told Putin to think about ending the war rather than continuing an endless conflict. India—the land of Gandhi and Buddha—desires global peace, as peace is the path to development. War yields nothing but destruction. Additionally, discussions were held regarding the economic partnership, defense, and business ties between India and Russia. PM Modi conveyed to Putin that economic development is contingent upon global peace.
What did Putin say?
Putin stated that India and Russia respect each other and engage in an equal partnership, which is why the relationship between the two nations is strengthening. He noted that India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, had visited Moscow just last week, during which the bilateral relationship was reviewed. Trade between India and Russia is steadily increasing, and the number of Indian students in Russia has also risen; these are indicators of the strengthening ties between the two countries. Subsequently, Prime Minister Modi remarked that India and Russia understand each other’s interests, respect one another, and engage on equal terms—which is why the people of India regard Russia as a trusted friend.
PM Modi met the Iranian President before meeting Putin
Prior to his meeting with President Putin, Modi also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During this meeting, the Iranian President suggested to Modi that peace in the Middle East is possible if India intervenes, noting that both the US and European nations listen to India. He urged Modi to speak with Trump and ask for a halt to attacks on Iran. The question now remains whether Modi’s meetings with Putin and Pezeshkian in Bishkek will truly usher in a message of global peace and whether Putin will heed Modi’s words—though only time will tell.
