Tomato: India’s  (India’s) neighboring country has extended a helping hand amid rising tomato prices. Tomatoes are being imported in large quantities from Nepal. But, the neighboring country has demanded the supply of rice from India in addition to essential goods. In fact, recently the Government of India had banned the export of non-basmati rice to curb the prices in the domestic market. This step had created upheaval in many countries, neighboring countries are also not untouched by this. However, what decision was taken by the government is not known.

Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture spokesperson Shabnam Shivkoti told that, ‘Nepal is ready to send tomato vegetable to India. In return, the Government of India will have to facilitate its access to the market and send some essential goods. According to the information, Nepal has written a letter to the government urging it to ‘export rice and sugar instead of tomatoes’.

Information has been received that tomatoes coming from Nepal will be sent to the markets of the country so that its prices can be controlled. Maximum tomatoes will be sent to Uttar Pradesh. It is known that most tomatoes are grown in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur of Nepal. Illegal tomato trade has been going on in India from here. But now the government has taken it into its own hands.

It is known that in the last one or two months, the prices of tomatoes in India were touching the sky. At some places, tomatoes were being sold at Rs 200, at some places at Rs 250 and at some places at Rs 300 per kg. However, the Government of India had recently started selling tomatoes on subsidy, due to which the price of tomatoes has come under some control. Now the price has come down to Rs 50 per kg.

Nepal had demanded 10 lakh tonnes of paddy, 1 lakh tonnes of rice and 50 thousand tonnes of sugar from the Government of India in view of the upcoming festivals and celebrations. At the same time, the Joint Secretary of Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture told that, ‘A few days ago, through the Ministry of External Affairs, we had requested the Government of India to supply food grains and sugar. However, we have not yet received any response from the Government of India. Rice prices have increased significantly in Nepal. Right now rice is available in the country at Rs.300 per kg.
