Why did the ruckus start?
New Konaseema district was carved out of West Godavari district on 4 April. Last week, the government of YS Jaganmohan Reddy issued a preliminary notice to rename Konaseema district to BR Ambedkar Konaseema. Objections were sought from the general public on this. In this context, the Konaseema Sadhana Samiti objected to the change of name. The committee demanded to retain the old name. After this, the committee had called for a protest today and had planned to hand over the draft letter to the District Collector Himanshu Shukla. Meanwhile, the police tried to stop the protesters on their way to the collector’s office, but the protesters became uncontrollable and the situation got out of control. In this there was a violent clash between the police and the protesters.
