Mali: A major terrorist (Terrorist ) attack has been carried out in Mali. The Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group JNIM, in coordination with Tuareg rebels, launched simultaneous attacks across several parts of the country. Mali’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in this assault. On Saturday, a suicide car bomb attack targeted his residence in the town of Kati, located near the capital, Bamako.
The attack claimed the lives of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, his second wife, and his two grandchildren. The blast was so powerful that it sent shockwaves through the outskirts of the capital, Bamako.
Attacks Across Multiple Regions
The rebels launched simultaneous attacks across various parts of the country. On Sunday, heavy shelling and fighting resumed in areas such as Kati, Kidal, Gao, and Sévaré. Tuareg rebels have claimed that Kidal is now entirely under their control. Under the terms of an agreement, the Malian army and their Russian allies were granted safe passage to withdraw from the military camps in the region.
It is worth noting that in November 2023, with the assistance of the Russian Wagner Group, the Malian army had recaptured Kidal from the rebels—territory which has now once again slipped out of their hands. The government maintains that the situation is under control; however, the reality on the ground appears quite different. Roads leading to military bases in the capital, Bamako, have been sealed off. Residents living in areas near the airport remain terrified by the sounds of explosions.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the European Union have strongly condemned these terrorist attacks and have called for international cooperation.
