Rescue Operation Continues in Uttarkashi
A joint team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is conducting the rescue operation. Four bodies have been recovered so far. Officials have confirmed that four people are still missing.
The recovered bodies were found near Kedar Kharak. The location lies at an altitude of around 4,000 metres. Rescue teams have been working in difficult weather conditions.
Heavy snowfall has covered parts of the trekking route. Poor visibility and unstable snow have also made movement difficult. Rescuers are continuing their efforts despite these challenges.
How Did the Kedartal Trekking Accident Happen?
The trekking expedition started from Gangotri on October 27. The group was expected to return on October 29. However, the team failed to reach its destination on schedule.
Authorities later received information about the avalanche and heavy snowfall. The missing members included trekkers from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, along with a local guide.
Four support staff members, including three porters and a cook, were rescued earlier. They were brought safely to Gangotri. The remaining members could not be located immediately.
Multiple Agencies Join the Search
The rescue operation involves SDRF personnel, NIM teams, Uttarakhand Police and the Forest Department. District administration officials are also coordinating the effort.
The teams are searching snow-covered sections of the route. They are also trying to reach areas affected by avalanches. The operation requires careful movement because of the high-altitude conditions.
Safety Concerns for Himalayan Treks
The incident has highlighted the risks of trekking in the Himalayan region during changing weather conditions. Sudden snowfall can make mountain routes dangerous.
Trekkers need to follow weather advisories and official instructions before starting high-altitude journeys. Authorities and trekking agencies also need to maintain communication with expedition teams.
The search for the four missing people remains the immediate priority. Officials are expected to continue the operation as weather and terrain conditions permit.
