10 Names Cleared for Judgeship in Punjab & Haryana High Court

National:In a significant step to strengthen the judiciary, the Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant has approved the appointment of 10 advocates as judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The decision was taken during a meeting held on May 4.

Among the approved names is Haryana’s Advocate General Pravinder Singh Chauhan, along with Monika Chhibber Sharma, Harmeet Singh Deol, Pooja Chopra, Sunish Bindlish, Navdeep Singh, Divya Sharma, and Ravinder Malik. In a separate but related resolution, the Collegium also cleared the names of Rajesh Gaur and Minderjeet Yadav.

The appointments come in view of the significant gap between the sanctioned strength of 85 judges and the current working strength of 58 in the High Court. Once approved by the President, these appointments are expected to ease the burden on the judiciary and improve the disposal rate of cases.

The High Court is currently dealing with a massive backlog of over 4.18 lakh cases, out of which more than 3.34 lakh have been pending for over a year, highlighting the urgent need for additional judicial capacity.
