Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump has issued a threat to Iran in a social media post. He has called for a swift agreement to be reached and for the Strait of Hormuz to be opened.
What Did Trump Write?
Trump wrote: “The United States is engaged in serious negotiations with a ‘new and more sensible’ regime in order to bring an end to our military operations in Iran. Significant progress has been made in this regard; however, if—for any reason—an agreement is not reached soon (though it is highly probable that one will be reached), and if the Strait of Hormuz does not immediately ‘open for trade,’ we will obliterate Iran in such a manner that we will completely destroy—by bombing—all of their power generation plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island (and perhaps all of their desalination plants as well!). We have deliberately ‘left all of this untouched’ until now. This will serve as retribution for the deaths of the many soldiers and others whom Iran ruthlessly killed during the 47-year reign of terror under the previous regime. Earlier, in an interview, Donald Trump stated that U.S. forces could easily take control of Kharg Island—a key Iranian oil hub located in the Persian Gulf. Trump remarked, “We might take Kharg Island; we might not. We have many options.” He added, “This would also imply that we would have to remain there [on Kharg Island] for some time.”
When asked about the fact that Iran has established a robust military infrastructure there, Trump responded, “I don’t think they have any defensive capabilities. We could take it over very easily.”
It is worth noting that the U.S. has previously carried out airstrikes targeting military bases on Kharg Island. Iran has issued a threat warning that if U.S. troops set foot on its soil, it will launch a ground invasion against the Arab nations of the Gulf and carry out fresh attacks.
