Indian-origin sage Sunak creates history by becoming the new Prime Minister of Britain

London. Indian-origin Rishi Sunak is about to create history by becoming the new Prime Minister of Britain. His rival for this post, Penny Mordant, announced his withdrawal from the race for the post of PM on the day of Diwali, after which Sunak was elected unopposed as the leader of the Conservative Party.

Sunak, 42, a former UK finance minister, had the support of more than half of the Conservative Party’s 357 MPs, while he needed at least 100 MPs to win.

Sunak was born in 1980 in Southampton. He earned a degree in philosophy from Winchester College and then went on to pursue politics and economics at the University of Oxford. After this he earned an MBA degree from Stanford.
Both Sunak’s parents are of Indian origin. His father Yashveer is a retired doctor, while mother Usha Sunak is a pharmacist. He moved to the UK from East Africa in the 1960s.
Although Sunak’s grandparents were born in British-ruled India, his birthplace is located in Gujranwala in present-day Punjab province of Pakistan. Thus the new British leader is both an Indian and a Pakistani.
Rishi Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys Chairman Narayan Murthy. They have two daughters Krishna and Anushka.
Before entering politics, Rishi Sunak was an analyst with investment bank Goldman Sachs. Sunak then moved to a hedge fund as a participant in the Children’s Investment (TCI) fund.
Rishi Sunak took oath as the MP of Yorkshire by placing his hand on the Bhagavad Gita in Parliament. He was the first UK MP to do so.
42-year-old Sunak has played various roles in the government till now. He was a junior minister in the local government in the year 2018-19. After this, he became the Chief Secretary of the Treasury in 2019-20. Sunak then became the Finance Minister of Britain in the year 2020-22.
