India Will Buy Oil from Russia ( Russia) 

Delhi: Following the Russia-Ukraine war, oil politics have intensified across the globe. The United States has been continuously pressuring various nations to distance themselves from Russia; however, India has made it clear that it will not compromise on its national interests. Despite the expiration of waivers granted under US sanctions, India has continued to purchase crude oil from Russia.     ( Russia)   The government has stated that India’s decision is based entirely on commercial requirements and that the country’s oil procurement will not be swayed by any external pressure. This statement sends a clear signal that India is intent on pursuing an independent policy regarding its energy security.

What Did the Government Say?
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum, categorically stated that India’s procurement of Russian oil has never been contingent upon US waivers. She emphasized that decisions regarding oil purchases are made solely on the basis of commercial viability and requirements. She further added that there is no shortage of crude oil in the market and that Indian refineries are fully prepared.

US Waivers Expire, But No Impact on India
The United States had previously granted temporary waivers for certain oil-related transactions involving Russia; the validity of these waivers has now expired. However, Indian officials maintain that this will have no adverse effect on India’s supply chain. According to experts, India is currently procuring crude oil from Russia at concessional rates—a move that has yielded significant economic benefits for the country. This is precisely why India intends to continue these purchases.

Russia Emerges as a Major Oil Supplier for India
Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, Western nations imposed a series of sanctions on Russia. In response, Russia began offering oil to Asian nations at discounted prices. India seized this opportunity and commenced purchasing Russian oil in substantial quantities. According to reports, India’s imports of Russian oil in the month of May could reach approximately 1.9 million barrels per day—a figure considered to be remarkably close to a record high. Experts state that India possesses ample alternative sources for oil supplies from countries such as the US, the UAE, Oman, and Iraq. Furthermore, given a slight moderation in domestic demand and increased availability in the spot market, there is currently no apprehension of a crisis.
