Janmashtami: The festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated with pomp and devotion across the country on Saturday. From Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura to Delhi, Jaipur, Srinagar and Kolkata, devotees in every corner worshiped Lord Krishna and celebrated his birth anniversary with joy. Heavy crowd in temples, ( temples) echo of bhajans and colorful decorations made this festival more special.
Duly worship done in Mathura-Vrindavan
Duly worship of Lord Krishna was done at midnight in Mathura and Vrindavan. The auspicious time of worship started at 11:16 pm on the night of August 16 and worship was done till 12:03 pm. Along with Mathura-Vrindavan, the festival of Krishna Janma was celebrated with great pomp in different parts of the country.
Many devotees who kept the fast of Janmashtami broke their fast at midnight. At the same time, some devotees will also break their fast on the morning of August 17. Let us tell you that Ashtami Tithi ended at 9:36 pm on August 16. Therefore, breaking the fast at midnight after Ashtami Tithi is also considered correct.
Grand event in Mathura, Yogi congratulated
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reached Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura and worshiped Thakur Keshavdev, Mata Yogmaya and Shri Krishna platform in the sanctum sanctorum. Addressing the devotees, he said, ‘This Brijbhoomi is the land of the leelas of Shri Krishna, the complete incarnation of Lord Vishnu. We are proud that the land of Uttar Pradesh has been blessed by spiritual places like Ayodhya and Mathura.’ He emphasized on preserving the heritage of Sanatan Dharma and balancing it with modern development.
Celebration at ISKCON temple in Delhi
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta offered prayers at the ISKCON temple and prayed for the progress of the country and Delhi. She said, ‘I congratulate everyone on Janmashtami. May Lord Krishna bless us and the country and Delhi progress.’ Many events related to Janmashtami were held throughout the day in Delhi, in which devotees participated enthusiastically.
Huge crowd at Govind Devji temple in Jaipur
In the Rajasthan capital Jaipur, there was a rush of devotees in Govind Devji, Gopinath and ISKCON temples since morning. Devotees started queuing up at Govind Devji temple from 3 am. Temple Sevadhikari Manas Goswami said that Janmabhishek and Tithi Puja took place from 12 midnight, while Nandotsav and Shobha Yatra will be taken out on August 17. The police made tight security and traffic arrangements in view of the crowd. Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said that CCTV and policemen in plain clothes have been deployed so that the devotees get a safe environment.
Kashmiri Pandits take out procession in Srinagar
Kashmiri Pandits in Srinagar celebrated Janmashtami with religious fervour. The procession, which started from the Ganapatyar temple, went up to Lal Chowk with devotees singing bhajans and some dressed as Lord Krishna. The procession was joined by men, women and children, who also offered special prayers for the victims of the cloudburst in Kishtwar.
Meditation and bhajans at Yogda Satsang Ashram in Kolkata
Janmashtami at the Yogda Satsang Sakha Ashram in Kolkata began with a two-hour group meditation at 6:30 am. Brahmachari Haripriyanand read out an inspirational letter by Mrinalini Mataji, former president of Yogda Satsang Society. It was followed by bhajans by Swami Amaranand Giri and Swami Shankaranand Giri. In the evening, a three-hour special meditation session led by Swami Chidananda Giri from 7:30 pm was live-streamed from Los Angeles.

West Bengal Governor C.V. Extending his greetings on Janmashtami, Anand Bose said, ‘May the divine love and wisdom of Lord Krishna pave our way. May his teachings give us the courage to follow the path of Dharma, Karma, Justice and Equality.’ Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote on Instagram, ‘On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I extend my heartfelt best wishes to everyone.’
Special arrangements at Bankebihari Temple in Vrindavan
As per the High Court’s instructions, only 500 devotees were allowed to enter the Bankebihari Temple in Vrindavan during the Mangala Aarti so that there is no accident due to the crowd. The temple management also broadcast the Mangala Aarti live so that more and more devotees could have darshan.

Temples were decorated with flowers and lights, and devotees remembered the leelas of Lord Krishna through bhajans and kirtans. The North Western Railway also ran special trains for devotees going to Jaipur and Khatu Shyamji, making darshan easier.
