Greenland should be ours: Trump (Trump ) 

Washington: US President Donald Trump     (Trump )    now wants US control over Greenland at all costs. He has already started making efforts towards this. Trump dismissed the possibility that the European Union would “strongly” oppose his efforts to acquire Greenland. His statement came shortly after Denmark sent additional troops to the Arctic island. Trump also threatened several European countries with tariffs.

Before his trip to Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF), Trump once again reiterated his desire to acquire the autonomous Danish territory (Greenland). This issue has increased transatlantic tensions and shaken the NATO military alliance. Speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump said in reference to the European Union’s opposition to his plans for Greenland, “I don’t think they’re going to object too much. Look, it should be ours.”

Control over Greenland is essential for US security
Trump has long wanted the US to control Greenland. The success of the military operation in Venezuela has boosted Trump’s confidence considerably. Now he is trying to acquire this territory by any means. He believes that increased activity by China and Russia in the region could pose a threat to the US. Therefore, he wants US control over the area as soon as possible.

Concern in European countries
Trump is speaking openly on this issue, and his statements have caused concern in the European Union. Several European countries are keeping a close eye on Trump’s actions. Protests have taken place in Copenhagen and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Not only that, but Trump played the tariff card on Saturday in response to the growing opposition from European countries to the US’s intentions regarding Greenland. Trump announced that if eight European countries oppose his bid to acquire Greenland, tariffs will be imposed on them.

Trump drops tariff bomb
Trump said that an additional 10% tax will be imposed on the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1st. This tax will increase to 25% from June 1st. European leaders have called this tax “unacceptable” and have vowed to support Denmark. According to reports, the European Union is also considering retaliatory measures against the Trump administration’s new import duties.
