New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said in a writ petition seeking concrete directions to check the social evil of dowry, it would be appropriate if the Law Commission considers the issue in all its perspectives. The Court disposed of the writ petition by granting liberty to the petitioners to submit a note of research on all relevant aspects to the Law Commission.
A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud said that there is no doubt that dowry is a social evil. A prayer to keep the jewelery and other property given in marriage in the name of the woman for at least seven years is very valid and the legislature will consider it very seriously.
Another prayer in the petition is for constitution of a pre-marriage course commission consisting of legal experts, educationists, psychologists, sexologists, so that individuals undergo marriage counseling before entering into marriage and make this course mandatory for registration of marriages.
There are actually communities that follow this system of counselling. You can address all this to the Law Commission so that it can look into it and suggest amendments to strengthen the law.
