New Delhi. Group Captain Varun Singh, the only survivor of a helicopter crash near Kinnur in Tamil Nadu, is currently undergoing treatment at an Army hospital. On Thursday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also informed about the health of Group Captain in Parliament. He told that Singh is currently on life support and every effort is being made to save him. This is the second time Singh has defeated death. Singh narrowly survived while flying the indigenously built Tejas fighter jet in October last year. Awarded the country’s third highest gallantry award – the Shaurya Chakra, Singh was in the same helicopter that was carrying 14 people including CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat. 13 people aboard this ship have died.
Singh received the gallantry medal when he was the Wing Commander with the Tejas Fighter Squadron of the Indian Air Force. He was on a trial flight of the newly inducted Tejas jet on October 20 last year to check the flight control system and pressurization system of the aircraft. However, the pressurization system of the fighter failed while flying at high altitude.
As soon as the Group Captain came to know about the problem, he decided to land at a lower altitude for landing, but his problem did not end there. During this, the flight control system also failed, due to which he could not control the aircraft. The plane kept falling down rapidly and during this time there were also tremors in the ship. Amidst all these flaws, the Group Captain regained control of the aircraft.
This happened for the second time as well but they decided to bring it under control and land it safely instead of leaving the plane and exiting itself. “It helped in accurate analysis of defects in the aircraft,” it said in his Shaurya Chakra letter.
