New Delhi. This time some elements are engaged in plotting to disturb the celebration of the country’s independence.(independence) Central intelligence agencies have warned of protests by Kuki or Meitei groups during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. During the hoisting of the tricolor by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and addressing the nation, some anti-government elements are conspiring to raise slogans along with hoisting flags and placards. Recently, intelligence agencies in New Delhi district discussed all these potential threats in a meeting held with Special Security Group CISF, Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force to share security preparedness ahead of Independence Day.

An official said that it was emphasized in the meeting that this year Independence Day is falling less than a month before the G20 summit to be held in Delhi in September. Any adverse incident before or during the ceremony will have a negative impact on the country’s image and preparedness to host a high profile event. Intelligence agencies also pointed out that various groups have been resorting to protests before or even during important events to highlight their issues.

Apart from issues related to farmers’ demand, uniform civil code, labour/services, the situation in Manipur was also among the major issues mentioned from the security point of view for this year’s event. While sharing threat information with Delhi Police and other security agencies, they have been asked to get every update on the protests. They should also coordinate with the police departments of neighboring states to keep an eye on the crowd and movement. Central intelligence agencies have also warned about social media, which is increasingly being used to radicalise and mobilize people, issue threats to celebrities and reward them for such acts.

The security concerns of the central intelligence agencies included the case of a Pakistan-based operative linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, among other major issues.
