China News: Considering eyelid twitching to be an omen of bad luck, he slapped his eye, damaging the retina; doctors issued a major warning

Beijing | A shocking case from China has once again highlighted the dangers of superstition. A man repeatedly slapped his own eye, believing that eyelid twitching was an ill omen, causing severe damage to the retina and affecting his vision. Thanks to timely treatment and surgery, doctors were able to save his eyesight.

Solution Sought on the Internet, Trouble Increased

According to media reports, a man from Wuhan in Hubei province had been experiencing persistent twitching in his right eyelid for several days. At first, he tried home remedies such as warm compresses, but they did not provide relief.

It was reported that instead of consulting a doctor, the man began searching for remedies on the internet. Trusting some misleading claims he found there, he started slapping the area around his eye repeatedly.

Vision Began to Be Affected

After some time, the twitching in his eye subsided, but gradually his vision became blurry. Later, he began to experience serious difficulty in seeing, after which he went to the hospital.

Upon examination, doctors found that the retina had detached from its position (retinal detachment). This is a serious medical condition in which, if timely treatment is not received, vision can be permanently affected.

Eyesight Saved After Surgery

Doctors immediately performed surgery and attempted to reattach the retina. Because treatment was received in time, the patient’s vision was largely preserved.

Doctors’ Advice

Experts have appealed to people to understand that eyelid twitching in most cases may be caused by common factors such as fatigue, stress, lack of sleep, or excessive strain on the eyes. If the problem persists for a long time or if any change in vision is noticed, one should get examined by an eye specialist immediately instead of self-treating or relying on superstition.
