New York. Through thousands of cases during the Corona (corona ) virus pandemic, it has come to light that if a person suffers from Covid-19 for a long time, he can suffer from brain, erectile dysfunction and even hair loss, among many other diseases. Can cause hair loss. Now experts have found a case in New York where a person died from a fatal brain disease called prion disease, possibly caused by COVID-19 infection.
Doctors at Mount Sinai Queens said it is ‘highly likely’ that COVID contributed to a New York City man developing the deadly prion disease. This study and diagnosis have been published in the American Journal of Case (AJC) Reports. This case shares details of what happened to a 62-year-old man who was admitted to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital Center, a hospital in New York, after having difficulty walking and showing signs of rapidly progressing dementia.
What the AJC report says:
“We are looking at a case report of a 62-year-old man admitted to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital Center who was suffering from rapidly progressing dementia along with difficulty walking and myoclonus. All results were negative. An MRI of his brain was done, but the results were inconclusive. Due to high clinical suspicion, CSF protein 14-3-3 testing was ordered and was positive. Clinically, he experienced a deterioration in his neurological system after testing positive for COVID-19 at the time of hospitalization. This case meets the probable diagnostic criteria for diagnosing PRD. The patient’s condition continued to deteriorate and he died due to the rapid progression of his condition.”
“Our case highlights the potential association of COVID with neurodegenerative conditions, particularly prion disease,” the study concluded.
What happened before diagnosis:
Two months before he was admitted to the hospital, the 62-year-old Queens man began drooling and walking slowly. He was only taken to a medical facility when, after collapsing at home, he was found unable to walk and talking intermittently. He tested positive for COVID-19 upon hospitalization, but did not show any symptoms other than the typical COVID respiratory symptoms.
“About 3 weeks after hospitalization, the patient gradually became mute and started having difficulty swallowing soft food, which required placement of a PEG [percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy] tube,” the doctor said. Later he developed body spasm related problems with severe pain on passive flexion extension. The note states that six weeks after being admitted to the hospital, the patient was declared dead.
What is prion disease?
Prion diseases are a group of rare, extremely fatal brain diseases that occur in both humans and animals. They are caused by the presence of an abnormal protein in brain tissue.
