ISLAMABAD: After the US announced a huge package for arms to Pakistan, it has now sent tons of relief material for the Pakistanis affected by the floods. Two more US military aircraft landed in southern Sindh province with this relief on Sunday. This province of Pakistan is one of the most affected areas by the floods. Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Saif Ullah said each plane carried about 35 tonnes of relief aid, which would be distributed to the province by the World Food Programme. He said the plane landed at Sindh’s Sukkur airport and the US operation, which began on Thursday, will continue till September 16.
Pakistan has faced extremely heavy Monsoon rains that started in mid-June this year. Many officials and experts have blamed climate change for the rains and the resulting floods. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last week called on the international community to send massive amounts of aid to Pakistan.
Ullah said on Sunday that two more flights carrying relief materials from the United Arab Emirates landed at Karachi airport. So far, UN agencies and several countries have sent aircraft carrying aid materials. Since mid-June, nearly 1,400 people have been killed and 13,000 injured and lakhs left homeless in the country’s severe floods. The flood waters also destroyed road and communication infrastructure.
