Delhi:In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police have arrested 84-year-old Chandra Shekhar Prasad for the alleged murder of his wife in 1986. The accused had been on the run for nearly four decades and was finally traced after investigators placed his children’s phones under surveillance.
According to officials, Prasad had been evading arrest since October 19, 1986, when he allegedly killed his wife at their residence in Shakarpur, Delhi. Police said he has now confessed to the crime during interrogation, bringing closure to a case that remained unresolved for years.
Crime Driven by Suspicion
Investigators revealed that Prasad moved to Delhi in 1969 and got married in 1971. The couple lived in Shakarpur, where domestic disputes reportedly escalated over time. Prasad suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair, which led to frequent arguments.
On the day of the incident in 1986, he allegedly attacked his wife with bricks, leading to her death. Police sources said his associates were also involved and reportedly threatened the domestic help at gunpoint before fleeing the scene.
Life on the Run for 40 Years
After the murder, Prasad disappeared and was declared an absconder in 1987. During his years on the run, he is believed to have lived a low-profile life, working as a rickshaw puller and spending time in ashrams to avoid detection.
The case saw a breakthrough recently when investigators tracked communication patterns linked to his family members. Surveillance of his children’s phones eventually led police to his location, resulting in his arrest.
Investigation Continues
Police are continuing their investigation to gather more details about the accused’s life in hiding and the involvement of others in the crime. Authorities are also examining whether his associates, who allegedly aided his escape, can still be traced.
