New Delhi. Ajaypal Singh Banga (Ajay Banga) of Indian origin has been elected as the new President of the World Bank. He will assume office on June 2, 2023. His tenure will be for 5 years. The 25-member Executive Board of the World Bank on Wednesday elected Ajay Banga as its President. US President Joe Biden nominated him for this post. Banga will replace David Malpass, the current President of the World Bank, on 2 June.
Ajay Banga is the first person of Indian origin, who has been selected for the post of President of the World Bank. Ajay was the vice-chairman of General Atlantic, one of the world’s largest private equity firms. Prior to this, he was the executive chairman and CEO of credit card major Mastercard. Ajay Banga has about 30 years of business experience. In addition to serving in various roles at MasterCard, he has also served on the boards of the American Red Cross, Kraft Foods, and Dow Inc.

64 years old Banga was born in a Saini Sikh family in Pune, Maharashtra. His father was a retired lieutenant-general of the Indian Army. His family is originally from Jalandhar. He is a graduate in Economics from St. Stephen’s College and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in the year 2016.
