against attempt(against) to ‘defame’ Dalai Lama

A bandh was observed in Leh and Kargil towns of the Union Territory of Ladakh on Monday to protest against (against) a “controversial video” of the Dalai Lama circulating on social media. The spiritual leader was criticized on social media for this video. The Dalai Lama had said that ‘if his words have hurt the feelings of the child, his family and friends’, he apologizes to them. In the two-minute-five-second video, the Dalai Lama asked the child to “take inspiration from good human beings who spread peace and happiness and not follow those who kill other people”.

The protesters, led by the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), supported the Dalai Lama and condemned the conspiracy to “defame” him and urged him to keep spreading the message of peace, love and harmony. According to the LBA, all shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicles off the roads in Leh and Kargil districts to protest “the comments made by various personalities defaming the Dalai Lama and hurting the religious sentiments of Buddhists by circulating videos on social media”. Hundreds of people took out rallies in Leh and Kargil against this. In the rally taken out to protest against defaming the Dalai Lama, people carried placards, religious flags with pictures of spiritual leaders. A social leader Sanfel told reporters here, “Bandh was organized in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh. People took to the streets to protest against the attempt to defame the Dalai Lama. We are hurt by this.
“A video clip is circulating that shows a recent meeting when a child asked the Dalai Lama if he could hug him,” said a statement issued by the Dalai Lama’s office. The Dalai Lama would like to apologize to the children, their families, as well as his friends around the world if his words have hurt their feelings. But, even in front of the camera, they tease very innocently. However, he has expressed regret over the incident.
