Lahore: Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday issued a notification appointing Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum as the new chief of Inter-Services Intelligence. From next month, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed will be replaced
“The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as Director General Inter-Services Intelligence with effect from 20 November 2021,” said a notification issued by the PMO on 26 October.
There was a tussle between the army and the government in Pakistan for a few days over the appointment of the ISI chief. However, after the release of the notification, now Anjum’s name has been stamped. According to the notification, the current ISI DG Lt Gen Faiz Hameed will take over as the ISI chief till November 19, 2021, the report said.
The appointment comes nearly three weeks after the alleged standoff between the Pakistan Army and the government over the appointment of Pakistan’s new spy. The report said that the army announced on October 6 that former ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed has been made Peshawar Corps commander, while Lt Gen Anjum has been appointed in his place.
But the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had not issued an official notification for the appointment of Lt Gen Anjum since then, sparking rumors about tensions in civil-military relations. Finally Imran Khan had to surrender before Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and now the appointment of Nadeem has been decided.
Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who was commissioned into service in September 1988, was earlier the chief of Corps-V in Karachi. Apart from this, General Anjum has commanded a brigade in Kurram Agency, headed the Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan and was also the Commandant of Command and Staff College Quetta before becoming Corps Commander Karachi in December 2020.
On October 12, after several days of speculation, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that the Prime Minister has the right to appoint the ISI chief and the prescribed procedure would be followed for the purpose. According to the report, he had said that the legal process will be followed in the appointment of the new DG ISI, to which General Bajwa and Prime Minister Imran Khan have agreed.
