Poonch. A junior commissioned officer and a jawan have been martyred in an encounter with terrorists in the Mendhar area of Poonch, a border district of Jammu. The encounter between the terrorists and the army personnel continued till Thursday night. At present, firing from both the sides has stopped and movement on the Jammu-Poonch highway has been stopped. So far, two soldiers have been martyred in the encounter. Whereas, one is injured.
It is feared that the terrorists could be from the same group with which five army personnel were martyred in the encounter on Monday. The identity of the soldiers who were martyred on Thursday is yet to be identified. At the same time, the encounter on Monday is being called the bloodiest face-off in 17 years. 7 soldiers have been martyred in the ongoing encounter in Poonch for 5 days, including two JCOs.
In view of the encounter, vehicular movement has been stopped on Rajouri-Poonch National Highway along Bhimber Gali and Surankote. More force has been sent to the spot. Officials had informed that it is believed that the number of terrorists could be four-five. They could be part of the same group that infiltrated the union territory in August. They were stopped by the police and security forces on their way to Shopian. On 6 August, two terrorists were killed. Whereas, the soldiers had killed another terrorist on 19 August.
