Kolkata: UNESCO has given a heritage status to the Durga Puja festival of West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness over this announcement of UNESCO.

UNESCO tweeted on Twitter with a picture of the idol of Goddess Durga, ‘Durga Puja in Kolkata has just been included in the Intangible Heritage List. Best wishes to India.
State Heritage Commission Chairman Suvaprasanna said that the ‘Red Road Carnival’, showcasing the craftsmanship of the construction of Durga Puja pandals, has made people across the world aware of its grandeur which is synonymous with the festival.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded UNESCO’s decision on Kolkata’s Durga Puja festival getting heritage status and termed it as a matter of pride and gaiety for every Indian. PM Modi tweeted and said, ‘A moment of pride and joy for every Indian. Durga Puja embodies our best traditions and ethos and Kolkata’s Durga Puja experience is a must for everyone.
