New Delhi. RailTel, a PSU of the Ministry of Railways, has been entrusted with the work of Integrated Tunnel Communication System (VHF Simplex) in sections of the J&K Rail Link Project of the Dharam-Banihal section, an important project aimed at connecting the Valley with the rest of the country. . The total cost of tunnel communication work is Rs 210.77 crore. The project includes design, supply of Emergency Call and Service Telephone, Tunnel Communication System with CCTV, Tunnel Radio in Tunnel Environment, PA System, Testing and Commissioning.
Poor signal coverage inside tunnels leads to communication disruptions, which can disrupt train operations and communication activities. This state-of-the-art integrated tunnel communication system is designed to provide uninterrupted radio communication between the handheld radio inside the tunnel, the base station of the tunnel control rooms, and the station masters of adjacent stations.
Handheld devices are provided to employees involved in construction maintenance and train operating activities. The communication of all channels in the tunnel is independent, simultaneous and failure free. The completion of this work will surely ensure safe and smooth running of trains inside tunnels in one of the toughest areas of Indian Railways.
RailTel CMD Puneet Chawla said that tunnel communication is an important part of the overall train communication system and RailTel has the expertise to work towards improving train operations as well as safety. RailTel is already undertaking similar projects for Panvel-Karjat, Karjat-Lonavala and Kasara-Igatpuri section of Mumbai Division of Central Railway and Castle Rock Kulem section (Braganja Ghat) of South Western Railway.
RailTel is eyeing more such projects and earning good revenue from these specific projects will not only help in diversifying RailTel’s work experience but will also help us contribute in nation building. The project will provide features such as continuous coverage over the entire length of the tunnel, uninterruptedly clear audio, reliable system operation in harsh tunnel environment conditions, trunked radio channels across multiple bands, and ease of operation and maintenance systems.
