New Study Suggests Early Universe Gravitational Waves May Have Created Dark Matter

Science:A new scientific study has proposed a fascinating link between Gravitational Waves and Dark Matter, offering a fresh explanation for one of the biggest mysteries in modern physics.

The research, led by Joachim Kopp from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz along with Dr Azadeh Maleknejad from Swansea University, suggests that ancient waves from the early universe may have played a key role in the formation of dark matter.

Dark matter is believed to make up a large portion of the universe, even though it cannot be directly seen. Scientists estimate that visible matter accounts for only a small fraction, while dark matter influences the structure and movement of galaxies across the cosmos.

According to the study, a special type of weak and continuous waves, known as stochastic gravitational waves, may have existed shortly after the Big Bang. These waves are thought to have formed during early cosmic events such as phase transitions or the presence of primordial magnetic fields.

Researchers propose that these ancient waves could have generated tiny particles called fermions. Over time, these particles may have gained mass and eventually evolved into the dark matter that exists today.

This theory presents a new pathway for understanding how dark matter formed, connecting it directly to early-universe processes rather than later cosmic events.

Scientists say the next step is to carry out more detailed calculations and simulations to test this idea further. They also aim to explore whether gravitational waves could explain other mysteries, such as the imbalance between matter and antimatter in the universe.

If confirmed, this discovery could significantly reshape our understanding of the universe’s origins and the hidden forces that continue to shape it.
