Nepal:In a major political development, Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung has resigned from his post following allegations of links with money laundering accused businessman Deepak Bhatt. Questions had also been raised regarding his financial transactions and investments.

According to local media reports, Gurung stepped down to ensure an impartial investigation and to avoid any conflict of interest. In a social media post, he stated that ethics are more important than any position and that public trust remains his top priority.

The controversy began after businessman Deepak Bhatt was arrested in a money laundering case. Following this, reports surfaced alleging connections between Bhatt and Gurung, along with scrutiny of Gurung’s financial dealings.

Media investigations revealed significant transactions between Gurung’s personal accounts, his organization “Hami Nepal,” and several companies. Some of these transactions reportedly lacked clear sources or purposes, raising concerns.

Accounts linked to “Hami Nepal” were held in Himalayan Bank and Nabil Bank
One account was closed in February 2025 with a substantial balance
Around ₹2.28 crore was deposited in another account between July 2021 and August 2025

Additionally, questions were raised over COVID relief funds being deposited into Gurung’s personal account before being transferred to the organization.

This marks the second resignation within a month in the new government led by Balen Shah. Earlier, on April 9, Deepak Kumar Sah had also stepped down following allegations of misconduct.

Gurung, 36, emerged as a prominent face during the 2025 Gen Z movement in Nepal. He was appointed Home Minister on March 27.
