Bahrain’s Proposal Blocked in the UNSC( Proposal )

New York: Russia and China have vetoed a resolution in the United Nations Security Council regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal    ( Proposal )   had already been watered down multiple times in an effort to secure the approval of both nations; however, despite these concessions, they proceeded to veto it. In the 15-member Security Council, the vote on the resolution stood at 11-2, with Pakistan and Colombia abstaining from the vote. This vote took place at a time when former U.S. President Donald Trump had issued a warning to Iran to reopen the strait by 8:00 PM (Eastern Time) or face massive attacks.

Bahrain’s Proposal Had Undergone Multiple Revisions
It is worth noting that this resolution was introduced by Bahrain. Initially, it called for the adoption of “all necessary measures,” a phrase that could have been interpreted as authorizing military action. Its objective was to ensure the free movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and to thwart any attempts to close it. However, following opposition from veto-wielding nations—such as Russia, China, and France—significant changes were made to the resolution. The final draft of the resolution removed any authorization for military or offensive actions of any kind.

20 Percent of the World’s Oil Passes Through Hormuz
The final resolution merely stated that nations utilizing this waterway should take defensive measures through mutual cooperation to ensure the safe passage of vessels. It is pertinent to mention that the ‘Strait of Hormuz’ is one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, through which approximately 20 percent of the global oil supply passes. According to reports, since February 28, in retaliation for attacks by the United States and Israel, Iran has targeted hotels, airports, residential areas, and other civilian infrastructure across more than 10 countries. These also include countries in the Gulf region, which are major global exporters of oil and gas.
