Interim leader Mohammad Yunus resigns (Interim )

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim     (Interim )   leader Mohammad Yunus announced his resignation from his post in Dhaka on Monday, a day before Tariq Rahman’s BNP government is formed. It is noteworthy that Tariq Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 17.

In his farewell address to the nation on Monday, Mohammad Yunus resigned and handed over power to the elected government. In his address, Mohammad Yunus said, “Today the interim government is resigning. But the process of democracy, freedom of expression, and fundamental rights that has begun should not be stopped.”

He also said that Bangladesh is no longer a “pressure” country and its relations with other countries will be based on mutual respect and national interest. With his resignation, Yunus has now officially handed over power to Tariq, having previously congratulated the BNP on its “overwhelming victory” in last week’s elections.

Mohammad Yunus has been leading Bangladesh since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
It is noteworthy that when Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in 2024, Mohammad Yunus took over as Bangladesh’s interim leader. He was leading the country as Bangladesh’s “Chief Advisor.”

BNP Wins Recent Elections
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader, Tariq Rahman, have won the recent elections in Bangladesh. Tariq Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 17. He is set to be sworn in as the new Prime Minister on Tuesday.

Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won 209 of the 297 seats, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats in the 13th parliamentary election. Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting the polls.

Breaking a long-standing tradition, the swearing-in ceremony of the 60-year-old BNP chief will be held at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex instead of the Bangabhaban. President Mohammad Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office to the new cabinet members at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday afternoon, state news agency BSS reported on Monday.
