Bangladesh Elections: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a landslide (landslide ) victory in the general elections held in Bangladesh. The BNP has emerged as the largest party in the parliamentary elections. According to unofficial results reported by Ittefaq newspaper, the BNP has won 158 seats, Jamaat 41, and others 5. The BNP had previously announced that if it wins the election, its chairman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son, Tariq Rahman, will be Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) spokesperson Mehdi Amin had previously stated that his party was confident of victory in the elections. He had stated that the BNP would win the elections and form the government. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman had stated that even if his party does not win the elections, it will not engage in the opposition’s obstructionist politics. Rahman stated that they will pursue positive politics.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairman Tariq Rahman won both Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 seats. Rahman not only retained his family-legendary seat, Bogra-6, but also won the capital’s high-profile seat, Dhaka-17.
The Bangladesh Parliament has 350 members. 300 are directly elected, while 50 are reserved for women. This is done through a first-past-the-post system. The term of Parliament is five years.
