Delhi: A day after heavy snowfall (Snowfall ) in the hilly areas of North India and rain in the plains, a significant drop in minimum temperatures was recorded. Several major roads in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh remained closed for the second consecutive day due to snowfall, affecting traffic and the movement of goods. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dense fog in some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab on January 25 and 26 (Sunday and Monday), while light to moderate fog is expected in Delhi on Sunday morning.
Minimum Temperature Drops
After the rain, a significant drop in minimum temperatures was recorded in the national capital Delhi-NCR. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung, the city’s main meteorological station, was recorded at 7.6 degrees Celsius, which is 0.1 degrees above normal. This is a significant drop from Friday’s minimum temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius, which was the highest in the last four years.
Where was the Lowest Temperature Recorded in Delhi?
The lowest minimum temperature in Delhi on Saturday was recorded in Aya Nagar, where the mercury dropped to 6 degrees Celsius. The IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies in Delhi on Sunday. The minimum and maximum temperatures in the capital are also likely to remain below normal.
Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir was the Coldest
Meanwhile, the weather improved in Kashmir on Saturday, allowing flight services to resume at Srinagar airport. However, night temperatures remained well below freezing in most parts of the valley. Gulmarg in Baramulla district of North Kashmir was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir, recording a minimum temperature of minus 12 degrees Celsius. This was followed by Sonamarg in Ganderbal district with a temperature of minus 10.5 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. Rain and Snowfall Forecast
The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, considered the harshest 40-day period of winter in Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has forecast light rain and snowfall in some parts of Kashmir on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, another Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, potentially bringing light to moderate rain and snowfall to most places.
Dense Fog and Cold Wave Alert
The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh on January 25. A ‘yellow alert’ has also been issued for dense fog and cold wave conditions in several districts. Meanwhile, night temperatures in several parts of Rajasthan dropped close to zero. The minimum temperature in Lunkaransar, Bikaner, was recorded at 0.3 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the state.
Mount Abu Records Minimum Temperature of 0.6 Degrees Celsius
The state’s only hill station, Mount Abu, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius, while Jaipur recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has predicted a further drop in temperatures in Rajasthan due to cold winds blowing from the north. The cold spell has also intensified in Punjab and Haryana. Bathinda was the coldest place in both states, recording a minimum temperature of 0.8 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal.
Faridkot Temperature at 1.6 Degrees Celsius
Hisar in Haryana recorded a minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius, while Faridkot and Ferozepur in Punjab recorded minimum temperatures of one degree and 1.6 degrees Celsius respectively. Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius.
Heavy Rainfall Expected on January 26
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu on Saturday and Sunday, and in Kerala on January 26. It has also predicted a gradual increase of two to four degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures in Gujarat over the next three days. The IMD has also predicted dense fog in some parts of West Bengal and Sikkim on January 25 and 26.
