Delhi: India has surpassed China ( China) to become the world’s largest rice producer. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced this on Sunday. Releasing 184 new varieties of 25 crops today, Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that India has overtaken China to become the world’s largest rice producer with a total production of 151.8 million tonnes. The minister said that these new high-yielding seed varieties will boost crop production and increase farmers’ income. He instructed ministry officials to ensure that these new varieties reach farmers quickly.
Major breakthrough in the development of high-yielding seeds
According to an official statement, the minister unveiled 184 improved varieties of 25 regional crops developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at an event held in the national capital. Addressing the event, Chouhan said that the country has achieved a major breakthrough in the development of high-yielding seeds. A total of 7205 crop varieties have been notified since the gazette notification process began in 1969, including rice, wheat, sorghum, maize, pulses, oilseeds, and fiber crops. Shivraj Chouhan informed that 3236 high-yielding varieties have been approved by the Narendra Modi-led government, while 3969 varieties were notified between 1969 and 2014.

The Agriculture Minister said that India has transformed from a food-deficient country to a global food provider. He said, “India has surpassed China in rice production and has become the world’s largest producer.” Calling it an unprecedented achievement, he said that India’s rice production has reached 151.8 million tonnes compared to China’s 145 million tonnes. He said that India is now supplying rice to foreign markets. He added that the country has abundant food grain reserves, which ensures India’s food security.
