Islamabad: Appointing his favorite, Asim Munir, as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) is proving to be a difficult task for Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The Pakistani opposition is preparing to launch a massive nationwide protest against the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill proposed    ( proposal.)    in Parliament.

Shahbaz Sharif’s agenda includes not only making Munir the CDF but also reducing the powers of the Supreme Court. The opposition has called this a massive conspiracy against democracy. The opposition has strongly criticized the government’s move, saying it will shake the “foundation of the Constitution.” Therefore, it has announced nationwide protests starting today, Sunday. The amendment proposes changes to Article 243, abolishing the position of “Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee” (CJCSC) and creating a new position called “Chief of Defence Forces.”

Criminal proceedings against the President will not be possible for life.
Other proposals in the draft include the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court and amendments to the appointment process for High Court judges. It also aims to reduce the powers of the Supreme Court, including transferring some authority to the proposed Constitutional Court and granting the President immunity from criminal proceedings for life. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar introduced the amendment in the upper house, the Senate, on Saturday, and Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani referred it to a House committee for discussion before a vote.

Committee Chairman Farooq Naik told the media that they will complete the task by building consensus among the members. The government hopes to secure a two-thirds majority of at least 64 senators when the vote takes place on Monday. After the Senate, it will be introduced in the National Assembly, where it will again need to pass with a two-thirds majority. In the final stage, it will need presidential assent to become law. The multi-party opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ain-e-Pakistan (TTAP) has announced a nationwide protest movement against the amendment. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) chief Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said in a statement, “Democratic institutions in Pakistan have been paralyzed.

The nation must take action against the (proposed) 27th Amendment.” The MWM is part of the TTAP, along with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The alliance also includes the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
