Karachi: Pakistan (Pakistan ) has announced a 48-hour ceasefire with Afghanistan following the deaths of dozens of people in clashes along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan over the past several days. Clashes broke out between Pakistani and Afghan troops in the northwestern border region on Tuesday. Pakistan has accused Afghan troops of unprovoked firing.

Pakistan on Wednesday announced a 48-hour temporary ceasefire with the Taliban administration in Afghanistan, starting at 6 p.m. (Pakistan Standard Time). However, Pakistan stated that the ceasefire request came from the Taliban. “At the request of the Taliban, a temporary ceasefire has been decided between the Pakistani government and the Afghan Taliban regime, with the mutual consent of both sides, for the next 48 hours, starting at 6 p.m. today.”

What is the dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan?
The border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, known as the Durand Line, stretches over 2,500 kilometers. This border was established in 1893 between British India (then not Pakistan) and Afghanistan. There is also a dispute over this. The Durand Line divides Pashtun tribes, who live in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Afghanistan does not recognize this as a legitimate border. Afghanistan claims that the Durand Agreement was signed under British pressure. Afghanistan also considers it a vestige of colonial rule.
