Violent protests in Leh (Violent ) 

Leh/New Delhi: The central government held Sonam Wangchuk responsible for the violent     (Violent )  clashes in Ladakh, which left four people dead and 70 injured. A statement issued by the Home Ministry said that despite several leaders urging him to call off his hunger strike, he continued with it and incited the youth.

Situation brought under control

The Union Home Ministry issued a statement stating that, except for a few unfortunate incidents in the morning, the situation was brought under control by 4 pm and asked everyone to refrain from circulating old and inflammatory videos in the media and social media. The statement said that the government is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Ladakh by providing adequate constitutional safeguards.

The Central Government is Negotiating

The Home Ministry stated that Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike on September 10th, demanding inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule and statehood. The statement stated that it is well known that the Government of India is actively engaging with the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. Several meetings have been held with them through the formal channels of the High Powered Committee and Sub-Committee, and several informal meetings have also been held with leaders. The next meeting of the High Powered Committee is scheduled for October 6th, while meetings with Ladakhi leaders are also planned for September 25th and 26th.

The Ministry stated that the process of dialogue through this mechanism has yielded unprecedented results, including increasing the reservation for Ladakhi Scheduled Tribes from 45 percent to 84 percent, providing one-third reservation for women in councils, and declaring Bhoti and Purgi as official languages. Additionally, recruitment for 1,800 posts has also been initiated.

Mob sets offices on fire

A government statement said that on September 24, at around 11:30 a.m., incited by his inflammatory speeches, the mob left the protest site and attacked the office of a political party as well as the government office of the CEC of Leh. They set these offices on fire, attacked security personnel, and set a police vehicle on fire. The unruly mob attacked police personnel, injuring over 30 police/CRPF personnel.
